My Community

The community my project intends to impact is the high school age demographic of Redondo Beach, California. I chose Redondo Beach for a few reasons. First, Redondo Beach is where I live and where I have lived for the past five years. It is an amazing town with many opportunities for civic engagement for people of all ages, and I’ve enjoyed being a resident here. All of the city’s public services function effectively, and I’ve met many neighbors who are kind and considerate of others, which makes me proud to be a resident of Redondo Beach. Although it has had a history of racism and exclusion from residence based on the criteria of race in the past, it is continuing to make strides to be a more diverse community that offers people of all backgrounds a place if they move here. I am especially proud, however, that Redondo Beach does not have as severe a history of racism as the other beach cities, because my Peruvian grandparents moved here in the 1970s and have not experienced significant racism since then. They get along with their neighbors well which shows me that Redondo Beach is not a home for racism.

The second reason why I chose Redondo Beach is because I want my project to be founded in the local community and then expand outwards. Eventually, I hope that Redondo Beach will be the home of the first of many chapters of Future Lawyers of America across Los Angeles and then across the United States.
